Microdermabrasion is a simple, nonchemical and noninvasive procedure that removes old and damaged skin cells to reveal younger and healthier skin. The procedure uses a spray of microcrystals to gently polish the skin.
Microdermabrasion is used to minimize fine lines, wrinkles, minor acne scars and reduce large pores, mild pigment irregularities, age spots and stretch marks. It may be used on the face, neck, chest, back, feet and hands. While it is a very safe procedure, it is not recommended for patients who have severe acne, rosacea, dermatitis or eczema.
During a microdermabrasion treatment, your esthetician or doctor will use a handheld device to spray a stream of very fine aluminum oxide crystals on the area to be treated. The handpiece is then placed over the crystals to gently exfoliate the old and damaged skin cells, restoring the skin’s natural glow. The treatment lasts for about 30 minutes to an hour.
>Yes. Microdermabrasion is gentle and safe. The noninvasive procedure is painless, although it causes a mild warming or tingling sensation in most patients. Because it uses nonallergenic crystals, it has virtually no side effects.
While you would see noticeable improvement after the first treatment, you would need about 5 to 12 treatments to attain optimum results. These treatments should be performed one to two weeks apart.
The skin takes on a pinkish glow immediately after the first treatment. The rosiness will fade the following day, revealing the skin’s improved tone and color. Once the series of treatments is completed, you will notice a more radiant, vibrant and firmer skin. Lines and scars are visibly reduced, and the skin has better texture.
Recovery is often immediate. There is no downtime with this procedure, and you can immediately resume normal activities. However, patients are advised to avoid sun exposure and to apply moisturizer to minimize peeling. Sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher is also recommended.
While side effects are very rare, you may experience minor skin irritation or sensitivity after treatment. These side effects are usually mild and brief. Should skin irritation persist, consult your doctor or other health professional.
