It’s your life. And you have every right to pursue a look and feel that promotes your self-confidence and enjoyment of it. A woman’s level of happiness with the appearance and feel of her breasts is intensely personal.
At Premier Plastic Surgery Center, we respect that. Premier Founder Dr. Victor Ferrari has earned his reputation as one of America’s top plastic surgeons. He combines elite-level training and experience with a deep personal commitment to his patients’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Breast Augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast enhancement, or breast enlargement, it refers to any elective surgical procedure that increases your breasts’ size or changes their shape.
With carefully chosen breast implants or natural fat grafting, you can have fuller breasts that enable you to feel more feminine, look more proportional, and fit better in your preferred styles of swimwear, brassiere, and clothing.
Artificial implants of differing shapes and kinds are surgically placed either over or under your pectoralis major chest muscle to enhance breast size. Placing implants under the chest muscle, or submuscular implants, are better for those with little natural tissue. Subglandular implants over the top of the muscle and under the glandular breast tissue is best for those with more natural tissue. Augmentation can also be achieved by surgically transferring some of your own purified body fat from a donor site to your breasts.
Breast Augmentation can enhance a woman’s appearance and boost her self-esteem. Your procedure can use customizable implants to achieve a wide range of goals, including:
An added benefit is that implants can later be removed or replaced as you wish.
In breast lift surgery, your doctor raises your breasts by removing excess skin and reshaping and tightening the breast tissue, resulting in a firmer and more uplifted appearance. Breast lift surgery does not significantly change the size of your breasts and can be combined with augmentation.
The ideal breast augmentation candidate has a positive self-image and desires an increase in bust size.
Per the FDA, you must be at least 22 years old to get silicone implants and at least 18 years of age to receive saline implants. Mammoplasty should never be performed until a candidate’s breasts are fully developed.
Recipients of breast implants should be aware that:
Charlotte plastic surgeon Dr. Ferrari will listen carefully as you outline your goals and expectations. If you and he decide augmentation is right for you, he will develop a customized plan that includes choosing the right kind, size, and shape of implants — along with the right surgical techniques and incision choice — to achieve the results you want.
Saline implants are filled with a fluid that has roughly the consistency of water while silicone implants are filled with a more viscous plastic gel. Implants also vary according to shape. Round implants are often chosen by those who want to achieve more fullness at the top of their breasts. But other shapes and textures are available. Ask Dr. Ferrari about “gummy bear” or “teardrop” implants, which are shaped to mimic the anatomical form of a natural breast. Also remember that breast augmentation can be achieved by transferring fat from another part of your body to your breasts.
Many women find that silicone implants look and feel more natural than saline implants. But silicone implants can cause more risks and complications if they leak or rupture than saline implants. If a saline implant ruptures, the fluid is safely absorbed by your body causing no further harm.
Saline implants require smaller surgical incisions since they are inflated after they are placed in your chest. The best part? Smaller incisions mean smaller scars. Ask Dr. Ferrari about newly-developed “hybrid” implants that combine the best features of both saline and silicone implants.
Depending on the type of implants and surgical technique you and Dr. Ferrari choose, your incisions will be made either under your breasts, under your arms, or around your nipples. Dr. Ferrari is a master at limiting and hiding incisions and scars!
The most versatile and popular incision method involves a horizontal scar that is discreetly located in the inframammary crease. This allows placement of implants of nearly any size, depending on your preferences. In addition, when the inframammary scar fades, it is virtually invisible unless you look closely. As an added benefit, nearly all clothing and swimsuit styles conceal the scar.
Through an incision hidden near the armpit (axilla), this incision allows placement of implants of a small to moderate size without leaving any scars on the breasts. While there is a limit to the size of implants that can be placed using this technique, it remains a popular option due to the extremely discrete nature of the scars. Transaxillary implant placement is also beneficial for patients with a known history of keloid scarring or hyperpigmented scars. While poor scarring can occur in patients of all skin tones, this method is sometimes called the Asian Breast Augmentation due to its popularity among Asian women with a higher risk of keloid scar formation.
With a circumferential incision along the margin of the areola, periareolar incisions allow implants of a modest size into the breast pocket. Some Charlotte breast augmentation patients elect to have periareolar augmentation as they find the dark pigmentation of the areola hides the resulting scar. Patients who have light-colored areola, a history of hypertrophic scarring, or desire a large increase in bust size are usually not good candidates for this technique.
While it is possible to place implants through an incision hidden in the folds of the navel, this is the least popular technique. The primary benefit is that the scar is extremely well hidden and placed far away from the breasts themselves, therefore not raising any eyebrows for patients concerned about keeping their augmented breasts a secret. However, implant malposition is more likely to occur since the surgeon does not visualize the breast pocket well. Many other techniques offer similar advantages with fewer risks; thus, this method is rarely used today.
After you provide your medical history, including any family history of allergies, you may need to have some pre-surgical lab work done.
If you smoke, please stop as it has been known to lead to complications. Prior to your surgery, you will need to suspend the use of aspirin or other medications that can increase bleeding. Dr. Ferrari may also advise you to fill and prescriptions, acquire postsurgical garments, or arrange for transportation and postoperative assistance prior to your procedure.
Augmentation mammoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. In certain cases, your doctor may require an overnight hospital stay. This will be assessed on an individual basis. Either way, make sure you have arranged for someone to drive you home and give you some help for a couple of days.
Your breast augmentation surgery will be performed using general anesthesia and usually takes about two hours.
Just relax and take it easy for a few days. Know that resting, eating well, and taking special care of your incisions can lead to a shorter recovery.
You will have some swelling around your incisions, and you may need to wear a surgical bra for up to several weeks. Dr. Ferrari will be available around the clock to address any questions or concerns. He’ll also schedule follow-up appointments with you to remove any sutures, tape, or drains used in your surgery and make sure you are healing correctly.
If you at any point experience symptoms such as unexplained heat or redness near your incisions, or feel very unwell, contact Dr. Ferrari immediately. Symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, chills, and muscle aches are normal and may be caused by the anesthesia, but any symptoms lasting more than 24 hours should be evaluated by a doctor.
You will immediately see the expected change in the size of your breasts, but it is usually between 3 to 6 months that implants settle into their permanent home within the breast pocket, also called the “drop and fluff” process. Things like symmetry, shape, or size cannot be properly evaluated until this happens, and it would be improper to advise on any revision surgeries until one year after the procedure.
The next step? You may need to buy some new clothes!
Dr. Ferrari is the first choice for many patients because he strives to deliver the best breast augmentation Charlotte has to offer and he possesses top-flight surgical skill training and experience. But beyond that, it’s because he cares, and he will always be available to his patients. As Dr. Ferrari puts it, “True compassion makes for a better physician.”

Since you will be under general anesthesia, you will feel nothing during your procedure. But post-surgically, there is no way to avoid some discomfort. While over-the-counter drugs are usually sufficient for pain management, Dr. Ferrari can prescribe stronger medication as needed and appropriate.
All surgeries carry risks, including infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, excessive scarring, adverse reaction to anesthesia, and allergic reaction to surgical materials.
Risks specific to this procedure include:
Incisions produce scars, which tend to fade over time. But remember, Dr. Ferrari makes the smallest incisions possible and makes them in virtually unnoticeable places.
Implants typically last ten years, depending on your lifestyle, activity level, and wear on the implants. Schedule regular MRIs to ascertain the condition of your implants.
Since pregnancy frequently alters breast size as it progresses, augmentation is not recommended for pregnant women. Many women report that augmentation did not interfere with breastfeeding, but some women have found it to be difficult and challenging.
Revision or removal procedures are available. Once your incisions are healed, bruises cleared, and swelling is gone, we would be happy to consult with you should your goals change.
The cost of breast enhancement can vary widely, and the type of the implant, surgical technique, and whether the breasts have been previously augmented tend to have the biggest impact on cost. Generally speaking, above-muscle implants tend to cost less than implants requiring submuscular or dual plane dissection. Saline implants are the most affordable type of breast implant. Anatomic implants (also called gummy bear or teardrop implants) may cost slightly more than round silicone implants.
If your surgery is performed purely for cosmetic reasons, your insurance will not cover the costs. Have a full conversation with Dr. Ferrari about costs during your consultation.
You will have a temporary decrease in nipple sensitivity following your surgery, but as your neural pathways re-establish and heal, sensations will start to return. Some report this taking a few weeks while other report a loss of sensitivity for up to a full year. It is natural to experience itching as your nerves and incisions heal.
